PORTLAND, Ore. --- Goalkeeper Nico Campuzano, who spent the past year playing with UD Las Palmas in Spain, has committed the University of Portland men's soccer program, announced head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt. Campuzano will come to The Bluff with three years of eligibility remaining.
"We are excited to add Nico to our soccer family here on The Bluff," Carlin-Voigt said. "He comes to our program having a high level of training from famous La Masia at Barcelona to his current situation at Las Palmas. Nico is not only a talented student-athlete but a team-first guy who will fit well into our team-first locker room. I was most impressed by Nico's character, level of humility and desire to keep improving."
Prior to his stint with Las Palmas, Campuzano was with FC Barcelona from 2014-16. He also previously spent time with Real Valladolid and Real Racing Club de Santander.
"I chose UP because of the high profile of both the men's soccer program and the engineering school, which I think can help me get as far as I can in these fields," Campuzano said. "Soccer culture here is amazing, with incredible facilities and a game philosophy that is really much like European football, so it will make my adaptation easier.
"UP has a great team spirit and a serious commitment towards the maximum development in personal, academics and sports fields, and that makes me really excited to take part in this program and to give my best."
"Nico will join Kienan Weekes and Georges as they push each other in a positive way," added Carlin-Voigt. "Nico is a long goalkeeper who is tough to beat and is very comfortable playing with his feet to build the attack. Nico was heavily recruited by many programs and we are excited he selected us here in Soccer City USA."
