PORTLAND, Ore. --- Incoming men's soccer freshman Jake Arteaga, who is ranked the No. 9 recruit in the country, has been named to the U.S. U-19 National Team that will travel to Trnava, Slovakia, to participate in 2018 Slovakia Cup, which is scheduled for May 1-12. Arteaga has been a regular in the U.S. Men's National Team system since 2014, and this will be his U-19 debut
"Anytime you get called in to represent your country at the U.S. Youth National Team level it's an honor and privilege," Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "Jake is another example of University of Portland's strong connection with U.S. Soccer and the top MLS Academies in the country. We were diligent in this recruiting class to sign not only talented players but good fits for the institution that fit into my system of how we want to play. We wish Jake the best as he now competes in international competition with the U-19's."
Arteaga, who hails from Glendora, Calif., has been with the L.A. Galaxy Academy since 2014, and he's seen some time with the L.A. Galaxy II. He was the team captain for the U.S. game against Costa Rica, and he's competed in several international tournaments. With the Galaxy Academy Team, Arteaga has twice been the U.S. Academy National Championship runners-up. He also won a national championship with his club team in 2012, he played with the ODP, and he was named a United Soccer Coaches Youth All-American.
Arteaga is part of UP's No. 3 recruiting class, which includes five players (Kelee Cornfield-Saunders U-17's, Alejandro J. Pereira U-17's, Greg Tracey U-18's and U-20's, and Tristan Weber U-17's) with youth national team experience.
In Slovakia, the U.S. has been drawn into Group B with Czech Republic, Kazakhstan and Ukraine, while Azerbaijan, Hungary, Slovakia and Wales make up Group A. All teams will face a fourth opponent in the placement stage, but only the two group winners will vie for Slovakia Cup Champions.
All the players on the U-19 roster are age-eligible for the team that will attempt to qualify for the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup to be held in Poland.
