Samory Powder Earns National Team Call-up for Trinidad and Tobago
Date Posted: 7/3/2023
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – Incoming Portland Pilots Men's Soccer transfer was called up to Trinidad and Tobago's senior national team this month for the preliminary training camp ahead of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer.
Powder joined the team earlier this month for the national team camp and was an unused substitute for the team in a friendly against Guatemala last week. He has been called up twice to the national team before this summer.
The forward will join the Pilots next season as a transfer from Detroit Mercy. Powder was a key attacker for the Titans, leading the team in goals and assists with five and seven respectively. He also made the 2022 Horizon League Second Team and was a Horizon League All-Freshman Team honoree in 2020. He played in 38 games over three seasons with Detroit Mercy, earning 37 starts with 10 goals and seven assists for 27 points in his career. He also played for the Portland Timbers U-19 squad back in 2018-19.
The Pilots are coming off their best season since 1995, having finished 15-3-3 overall after advancing all the way to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the first time since that same year. They went undefeated at home as well with 11 wins, which was the longest home winning streak in both program history and in the nation.
The Gold Cup starts today, June 16, with the preliminary rounds. Trinidad and Tobago will start their Gold Cup run on June 25 with the beginning of the group stage.
